They say Wexit.
They say migrants.
They say nothing about the treaties.
But here we are again... in Niagara Falls , watching the country mislabel displaced First Nations families as “migrants,” ⚠️ External content contains misleading framing🔥 The Fake Headline vs. the Real Story while ignoring the one thing that makes all of this make sense:the treaties.
No the hotels in Niagara aren’t full of refugees from another country.
They’re full of First Nations evacuees from northern Manitoba . From communities like Pimicikamak and Mathias Colomb Cree Nation. They were forced out by wildfire, and relocated thousands of kilometers away to a treaty-covered territory they’ve never lived in, but are still connected to by history, law, and blood.
🧭 What do treaties have to do with it?
Everything.
This land Niagara, Six Nations, the whole damn corridor between the Lakes is governed by treaty agreements. Not by modern press releases or political parties.
These aren’t expired, symbolic documents.
They are binding nation-to-nation agreements:
-
📜 Treaty of Niagara (1764) affirmed peace, mutual respect, and Indigenous sovereignty between the Crown and over 20 First Nations.
-
🥄 Dish With One Spoon committed to shared stewardship of this land, without violence or hoarding.
-
🪵 Haldimand Proclamation (1784) granted the Six Nations territory along the Grand River, forever.
Every Indigenous person on this land, whether from Ontario, Manitoba, or beyond is tied into that history. And every Canadian is too, whether they admit it or not.
👣 The Evacuees Are an Opportunity , and NOT a Burden
So what do we do when evacuees land here?
We don’t erase them.
We don’t call them migrants.
We don’t treat their presence like an inconvenience.
We treat it as a teachable moment.
Right now in Niagara Falls, in Toronto, in every community hosting evacuees we have an opportunity to say:
“Let us tell you about the treaties.
Let us explain why this land was meant to be shared.
Let us show you what Elijah Harper meant when he said no.”
Because if people don’t learn the truth now, when the smoke is still fresh and the hotel doors are still closed, when will they?
✊ Wexit Can’t Happen. The Treaties Still Stand.
Wexit wants to draw a line and walk away.
But you can’t secede from land you never legally owned.
Not when treaties still govern that land.
Not when the people who signed those treaties or their descendants are still here.
Even if they’re currently sleeping in hotel rooms a thousand miles from home.
🗣 Final Word
If we’re going to talk about nationhood, displacement, identity, and fire then we have to talk about the treaties.
And if Canada won’t?
Then we will.
We all Elijah Harper now.
